Barium Carbonate
> Chemical Formula: BaCO₃
> Appearance: White powder, insoluble in water
> Key Characteristics: High thermal stability, high melting point, decomposes at elevated temperatures into BaO (Barium Oxide) and releases CO₂.
> Function: Commonly used in ceramic formulations as a flux, modifier, and sintering aid.
Major Applications
(1) Ceramic Glazes:
> Fluxing Agent: Decomposed BaO lowers the melting point of glaze, facilitating smooth melting.
> Gloss Enhancement: Provides high transparency and glassy appearance to glazes.
> Color Development: Influences glaze coloration, brightens hues, and modifies tones (notably in copper red and iron blue glazes).
>Surface Properties: Improves the hardness and abrasion resistance of the glaze layer.
(2) Ceramic Bodies:
> Improved Plasticity and Sintering: Small additions of BaCO₃ adjust body shrinkage, reducing firing cracks.
> Efflorescence Control: In brick and tile production, BaCO₃ reacts with soluble sulfates to form insoluble barium sulfate (BaSO₄), preventing surface scumming or efflorescence.
